Anybody collect those? I thought the upsys were so cute. I always wanted one, but never got one. What's the story behind them?

I do. I have a few sets MIB.
They were made by Mattel in 1969, and according to the book "Welcome to Upsy Downsy Land" the story goes: "Upsy Downsy's started life as dandelions, a blustery wind blew them into town, but the dandelions tickled the wind's nose, so he blew them all away. When the dandelions fell back to earth the next morning, some of them drifted through a rainbow and turned into funny little people, they landed right side up, so they were called Upsys. Others fell into a storm cloud and came out looking like silly people. When they fell to earth, they landed on the ground on their heads and hands, so they were called Downsys." But I suspect the real story is they were tripping on something at Mattel ;-) Some of mine (Click the pic to enlarge)

I think the idea sprang from lsd or sid and marty kroft... It was the psych generation how can you be a toy designer and not notice the wild climate, hippys,
mods, drugs colors.
I think it's hard to be an artist and not be influenced by the street unless you live in a box with no tv. I love downseys! my first was pocus hocus. Not a big upsey fan but i did buy a mib happy go round just to play with. I had one when I was a kid and broke the post on the carosel. floozey woozys buck teeth and glasses apppealed to me. I don't like prissy, pink fluffy things. I love the style of the accesories. The foot mobile is my favorite. i think the plastic for most of the cars is brittle. a few of my pieces are chipped. |

Hmmm, I never thought of Upsy Downsys and Puf N Stuf in the same thought. I think you're right. My favorite Kroft show was ''The
Bugaloos''. Sparky Firefly looked like an upsy.

Ha ha I have some signed dvd's from them forget if it's the Bugaloos or HR Pufenstuff. Loved Lidsville.

I loved Lidsville with Butch Patrick( Eddie Munster), Charles Nelson Reilly and Billie Hayes. Few people realized that Billie Hayes, Witchiepoo from Puf N Stuf
was Weenie the Genie on Lidsville. Her only other memorable role was in the early 80's on General Hospital.
How did you get your DVD's signed? Did you meet the Krofts? Helene |

I keep an even assortment of Upsys and Downsys, I like both,
though I'll admit something about colourful oddballs standing on their heads appeals to me haha That's so true, everything I remember from my childhood was psychadelic; toys, books, TV - even my room was done out in Peter Max. I loved the Bugaloo's too! :-) |
